BMG Bullion Fund
Bullion Management Group was the first company to bring the concept of individual investors holding precious metals directly when they launched their BMG Bullion Fund back in March 2002. The concept was simple – the fund would hold equally weighted portions of fully allocated, unencumbered gold, silver and platinum bullion on behalf of investors. BMG was really the only game in town when it came to investing in bullion until. 2009, when Sprott launched their Sprott Gold Bullion Fund.

Like other funds managed by Jim O’Shaughnessy, this U.S. Small / Mid Cap Fund is managed using the same quantitatively driven strategy which looks for certain characteristics which have been shown to drive excess returns over time. These characteristics include such things as trading volume, low price to sales ratios and increasing earnings and share prices. The manager rates and ranks the investment universe based on these criteria and then picks the top 50 ranked stocks and which are then added into the portfolio. To say that Trimark has gone through some tough times in the past few years is like saying there are some concerns aboutGreece’s outstanding debt. The company has struggled with retaining managers and has been experiencing significant net outflows for years. The Trimark Fund is not that different, having been through a number of managers in the past few years. Current lead manager, Dana Love has been working on the fund since 2004. Manager Noah Blackstein uses a very concentrated, growth oriented approach in managing this fund. Because of this, the fund tends to be considerably more volatile than other U.S. equity funds, with a level of volatility more than 1.5 times the S&P 500 Index.

Within the European equity category, one of the hardest hit funds has been the AGF European Equity Class Fund which has dropped more than 15.7% in each of the past three years. When you open the hood on this fund, it is not hard to see why. The fund is heavily invested in financial stocks, which have been severely punished by the markets since the onset of the global credit crisis in 2008. With continued volatility expected in the sector and continued loan write downs expected, more downside for this fund is likely.

If you are not familiar with this small fund it’s worth your time to find out about it. It was a closed-end fund until May 2011 but it is now a regular mutual fund with an initial investment requirement of only $500. The numbers it has been posting are eye-popping, to say the least. As of mid-October, the A units had gained an astonishing 25.5% for 2011, making the fund far and away the top performer in the North American Equity category. That came on top of profits of 18.3% in 2010 and 36.1% in 2009, all first quartile finishes.
